Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- [knowledge and understanding]: know and understand the key issues, technological and design solutions of computer science basic and its use in a scientific environment;
- [applying knowledge and understanding]: apply technologies and instruments needed for arrangement, graphical representation and analysis of scientific data;
- [learning skills]: understand handbooks of software; utilize the acquired expertise to independently approach other programming languages and software;
- [making judgments ]: achieve an independent judgement in dealing the design of computing solutions;
- [communication skills]: communicate the acquired knowledge using the correct technical language; communicate scientific data through understandable and incisive graphical representations.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

- Basics of computer science: the computer, the Von Neumann's machine, the hardware, the software, binary representation of information, binary numbers and operators, binary data encoding.
- Infrastructural and personal computer tools.
- Introduction to the OriginPro program: arrangement, analysis and plot of scientific data.
- Introduction to the Matlab program: basic functions, arrays and matrices, analysis and plot of scientific data.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures (in person) and computer exercises (assigned at each lecture).
The recording of the lectures and the slides used to support lectures will be uploaded at the end of the lecture on the Elly platform and will be available for student attending the course (enrolled in the online course on Elly).

It reminds non-attending students to check the available teaching material and information provided by the teacher through the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The qualifying examination (the exam does not include a vote) can be passed after an oral test that will focus on the topics presented in the lectures and on the assigned exercises.
The regular delivery of all assigned exercises exempts the student from the final exam.
