Learning objectives

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND: At the end of the course the student will know the fundamental and current principles of integrated virtual design. In particular, through the lectures held during the course, the student will acquire knowledge of the tools and techniques for defining the virtual model, reverse engineering, functional simulation and life cycle assessment, and through laboratory exercises will have the knowledge for the digititalization of the product, its manufacture with additive techniques and its presentation with virtual techniques.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Through the practical exercises carried out in the classroom and independently, the notions on techniques and digital tools for the description of the virtual product will be provided and directly applied following the product development cycle, the tools to define the requirements of the product and describe the entire model according to these requirements.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: The student must be able to critically evaluate what he has learned.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Through the lectures and the comparison with the teacher, the student acquires the specific technical vocabulary. At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to transmit, in oral and written form, the main contents of the course, and to clearly present the results of analysis and modelling.
LEARNING SKILLS: The student who has attended the course will be able to deepen their knowledge through the independent consultation of specialised texts, scientific or popular magazines, even outside the topics strictly dealt with in class, in order to effectively address the entering the world of work or undertaking subsequent training courses.

Prerequisites

The preliminary attendance of the DRAWING AND PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES course of the 2nd year is strongly recommended

Course unit content

The course aims to address the theoretical and applicative foundations relating to parametric methodologies for the modeling and design of simple mechanical products and components. Virtual design methods are introduced with particular reference to industrial products.

Full programme

The course aims to provide an overview of modern virtual design methods with particular reference to industrial products. The following topics will be treated:
- Study of the main integrated design variables, multi-physics, multi-scale, multi-parameters;
- Virtual Modelling of Components, virtual environments and software tools
- Physical and virtual prototyping techniques (VR and AR);
- Virtual prototyping & Reverse Engineering
- Manufacturing for Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing;
- Main simulation techniques to support the design;
- Concurrent Engineering and Collaborative Product Development;
- Life cycle, product complexity, the importance of simulation;
- Product specifications (project examples).

Teaching methods

The course is divided into three related didactic areas: lectures, relating to the concepts on the definition and management of the virtual model; classroom exercises on CAD modelling and reconstruction; laboratory activities related to reverse engineering and 3D printing (additive manufacturing). The course therefore includes both theoretical lessons and exercises, in which mainly frontal moments will alternate with interactive moments with the students. During the theoretical lessons, the main models and tools for virtual environment design and integration techniques will be discussed, with the aim of providing a conceptual and operational framework of industrial design.
During the exercises the student will be able to practically realise the solutions of the problems outlined in theoretical form during the lessons. In addition to the normal exercises, a simple project will be developed autonomously which will constitute the exam: during the simulations students will be asked to work in complete autonomy. The simulations will not be evaluated, they have a self-evaluation purpose: each student will be able to check their level of preparation and understand, for example, on which part of the program or on which type of exercise they will have to focus more in view of the discussion of their project.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam consists in a test of 15-30 questions, and the drawing of a simpe CAD model.
