Learning objectives

The course aim to provide knowledge and understanding (Dublin Descriptor I) of the key issues, technological and design solutions of computer science basic and its use in a scientific environment.
Attendance at lectures and laboratory activities of this teaching offers students this competence (II
Descriptor of Dublin): master the technologies and instruments needed for the laboratory activities.
In consideration of Descriptors III, IV, and V, the course has the explicit goal of giving students the independence to form their own opinions (in the design of computing equipments), communication and learning skills (ability in tracking the technologies, also by interacting with the main stakeholders).

Course unit content

Binary representation of the information, binary number and operators, binary data encoding.
The computer, Von Neumann's machine, the hardware.
The Software, classification and production, operating systems, application software.
Introduction to computer networks. Introduction to computer programming.
Laboratory: Infrastructural and personal computer tools. The vision of IT systems by the end user and the development of simple programs with the main scientific languages.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures and lab exercises.
The teacher's lectures used to support lessons will be uploaded weekly on the Elly platform.
To download the material, you need to enroll in the online course platform.
Slides are considered an integral part of teaching material. Non-attendant students are invited to check the available teaching material and the instructions provided by the teacher through the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The qualifying examination (the exam does not include a vote) can be passed after an oral and practice test.
The test consists in the practical execution of one or more exercises proposed during the course.
The activities carried out in the laboratory require the drafring of reports relating to the work performed, the regular delivery of which exempts the student from the final exam.

Please note that online enrolling to the exam is mandatory even in the case of exemption.
