- Pathophysiology of hematopoiesis
- Control mechanisms of oncogenesis and tumor growth
- Stem cells and bone marrow transplantation
- Pathophysiology of the immune system
- The immune surveillance in onco-hematological and infectious diseases.

Course unit content

Basic biologic, molecular and cellular mechanisms with clinical implication in oncologic, hematologic and infectious diseases:
- Pathophysiology of hematopoiesis
- Control mechanisms of oncogenesis and tumor growth
- Stem cells and bone marrow transplantation
- Pathophysiology of the immune system
- The immune surveillance in onco-hematological diseases
-Pathophysiology of common bacteric, viral and mycotic infections
-Cellular and tissue response to infective agents

Full programme

The student should know the pathophysiologic basis of the following diseases :
Hematologic
- Anemia , thrombocytopenia and leukopenia
- Aplastic anemia
- Myelodysplastic Syndromes
- Acute Leukemia
- Myeloproliferative Syndromes
-Lymphomas
-Multiple Myeloma and Monoclonal Gammopathies
Oncologic
- Malignancies: breast, lung, stomach, colorectal, kidney, prostate and ovary
Infectious
-hepatitis
- Tuberculosis
-HIVInfection
-Mononucleosic Syndromes
- Infections in the immunocompromised patient

Students must learn the basic principles of the clinical approach to the patient affected by hematologic, neoplastic and infectious diseases.

Setting the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Plan
- Interpretation of objective data and supporting laboratory and instrumental data
- The student must be familiar with the clinical features and elements of the differential diagnosis of palpable or radiologically proven neoplasms
- The student must be able to interpret haematologic indices, molecular studies and reports on microbiological and histological diagnosis
-Basic knowledge on clinical staging of the disease
- Interpretation of symptoms
- The student should recognize the specificity and clinical relevance of symptoms related to the disease
- The student must be familiar with the general clinical conditions influencing the approach to the patient affected by onco- hematological and infectious diseases.
- The student must be familiar with the methods of indexing the assessment of the performance status
- Participation of the student in the diagnostic workup of the patient
- assist the physician in performing diagnostic maneuvers: bone marrow fine needle aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture , paracentesis , and liver biopsy.
- Preparation and evaluation of cyto- morphological samples of peripheral blood and marrow aspiration.

The student needs to know how to set up, based on the clinical picture and available procedures, the correct diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of onco-hematological and infectious diseases
- The student must know the principles of treatment of onco-hematological and infectious diseases, and the clinical effects of therapeutic approaches:
- Chemotherapy
- Molecular targeted therapies
- Radiotherapy
-Bone marrow transplantation
- Antibiotic
- Anti- fungal
- Anti- viral
- Supportive Care

Teaching methods

According to the regulation of the Italian Government and the University of Parma about the COVID-19 pandemics, the present course is realized with frontal lessons via mixed in-presence and at-distance modality. In particular, the teacher takes lessons in the classroom with the help of PC (Powerpoint slides) ; simultaneous connection of the PC to the Teams platform in streaming modality ensures connection with students not present in the classroom. Each lesson is registered and loaded in the Elly portal of the course, together with the slides.
The teacher is available for further explanations in office or by distance via Teams after e-mail appointment, or via chat on Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course provides an oral examination. Through questions regarding the course content will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content and if he has reached the goal of applying the acquired knowledge to the future medical profession.
In case the COVID-related sanitary emergence continues, the examination will proceed on the Teams platform (see the guidelines at the address: http://selma.unipr.it/).
