Integrated course unit module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY AND HISTORY OF MEDICINE

Learning objectives

The student will (a) know the main advances in medical knowledge and practice and (b) acquire the capability of understand medical notions in an historical perspective.

Prerequisites

There is no specific prep requirement for this course. The Council of the Medical School has defined what examinations are mandatory to have the possibility to undergo the exam of General Pathology and History of Medicine.

Course unit content

The course will concern the main advances in the medical theory and practice, with particular emphasis on specific subjects.

Full programme

The origins: medicine in prehistoric and pre-classical ages.
Greek and Roman medicine.
Outside Europe: China and India
The medieval medicine: plagues, hospitals, universities
The modern age: the anatomic revolution and the first discoveries in physiology
XIX and XX centuries: from illuminism to the origin of experimental medicine and the triumphs of molecular biology
The 3rd millennium: technologies and perspectives
Specific subjects:
- Disease evolution
- The Black Death
- Virchow and the experimental approach to medicine

Teaching methods

Interactive oral lessons with slides highlighting the major points. The slides will be organized in presentations availble to the students on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students will arrange a PowerPoint presentation on a subject relevant for the history of medicine.
The presentation will be discussed and evaluated during the oral examination on the other parts of the Integrated Course and will contribute to the final grades. See the site of the Integrated Course for further information.
