Course unit structured in the following modules:

Learning objectives

The Integrated Course of Physical Risks in the Life and Work Environments aims to provide the students with knowledge and understanding of the topics detailed in the programmes of the Modules.
Briefly, the students will have to know and understand basic principles about the nature of noise and vibrations, electromagnetic fields and ionizing radiations, know their applications and the effects on human health and the environment, know the main measuring instruments, their use and current regulations, acquire the capability to make measurements on their own (only for noise measurements).

Prerequisites

Basic physics knowledge.

Course unit content

The Integrated Course of Physical Risks in Life and Work environments is composed of four Modules:
Non-ionizing Radiations, Electromagnetic Fields, Health Physics, Radiation Protection. After a review of the physical bases of waves, and specific reference to noise and vibrations, electromagnetic fields, and ionizing radiations, the course will describe applications, risks for the environment and human health, measuring instruments and techniques.
More details on the contents are provided in the description of each Module.

Full programme

As specified in each Module description.

Teaching methods

The topics contained in the program of each module will be illustrated and commented during classroom lectures and seminars. Lectures will be integrated by laboratory activities, where instruments and measuring techniques will be illustrated, and the students will be involved in real measurements.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the goals of the Integrated Course will be assessed through oral or written tests, as specified for each Module, mainly consisting in open questions.
In this way, it will be possible to assess the students' knowledge and understanding, and the capability to apply the acquired knowledge, about the physical bases of electromagnetic fields and ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, their use and risks for the environment and human health, current regulations, measuring instruments and techniques.
The global evaluation will be based on the average of the grades achieved for each Module.
