Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students the knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of Pediatric Dentistry in the light of the epidemiological oral disease and the health needs of the pediatric population.
The purpose of the course is also to provide the student with the ability to use the knowledge and understanding gained in order to make the diagnosis and treatment of the most common oral pathologies of childhood, making health care specialist wide-ranging, adequate and effective in dental care for children, adolescents and for subjects in which there are associated diseases. Is placed special emphasis on preventive techniques, clinical evaluation of dysplasia and the treatment of trauma.

During the course, topics related to epidemiology, etiology and prevention of major diseases of pediatric dentistry.

Examination of the oral cavity
Eruption of teeth: local factors, systemic and congenital influencing the process
Acquired and developmental disorders of the teeth and oral structures
Dental caries in children and adolescents:
§ risk factors,
§ early childhood caries
§ oral hygiene
§ Nutrition
§ the fluoride
§ the sealing of pits and fissures
§ conservative and endodontic treatment in primary dentition and permanent teeth with open apex
The dental trauma
Disabled children and oral pathologies

Teaching methods
The student at the end of the course, using the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, general pathology, hygiene, restorative dentistry, endodontics, preventive dentistry and community pediatrics must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:
Promotion of oral health in children. Epidemiology and prevention of major diseases of interest dentistry: dental anomalies, malocclusion, dental trauma, early childhood caries, oral health in children with disabilities.
The student also applying the knowledge and understanding acquired, shall be able, even collaborating with other professionals, to formulate a diagnosis and proceed to the treatment of the most common oral pathologies of childhood, making health care specialist wide-ranging, adequate and effective in dental care for children, adolescents and for subjects in which there are associated diseases.
Due to the emergency situation, lessons may also be delivered remotely (either in synchronous or asynchronous mode) via Microsoft Teams.
Assessment methods and criteria
The achievement of the objectives set by the course includes an oral examination. Through questions about the contents of the course will be determined that the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions relating to oral pathologies of childhood, strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment plans according to dormulazione of national and international guidelines, will ensure the ability to apply the knowledge acquired by the student.
