Learning objectives
General and Environmental Hygiene course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge to understand factors that may interact with the health of the individual and the community, and learn the meaning of prevention strategies.
Course unit content
The first part of the course is devoted to the knowledge of the basic concepts of epidemiology and general prevention of infectious diseases and chronic - degenerative diseases with particular reference to current issues of Public Health.
The second part of the course is aimed to the study of the relationship between community health and environment considered in its main matrices.
Full programme
General epidemiology of infectious diseases: Host-parasite relations, sources and reservoirs of infection, transmission mode, mode of occurrence of infections in the population. General prophylaxis: types and levels of prevention; diagnosis, notification, isolation, sterilization, disinfection, pest control.
Active immunoprophylaxis, vaccines, vaccination schedule and strategies; passive immunoprophylaxis and chemoprophylaxis.
Epidemiology and prevention of non-infectious diseases of social importance.
Environmental hygiene: physical, chemical and biological contaminants and their toxicological aspects. Water hygiene: physical, chemical and microbiological criteria for drinking water. Wastewater biological treatment systems. Solid waste treatment and disposal systems. Air pollution: the main pollutants and their effect on human health.
