Integrated course unit module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the essential bases of both innate and specific immune response. Such knowledge will help the student in the understanding of certain diseases in dentistry.
At the end of the course the student will have to:
- know the basic principles of immunology;
- be able to describe the structure and function of the cellular/molecular components of innate and adaptive immune systems;
- recognize and define the immunological phenomena involved in dental pathologies

Prerequisites

Course unit content

Nomenclature and components of the immune system. General characteristics of immune responses. Mechanisms of innate immunity and adaptive immunity

Full programme

The immune response. The Major Histocompatibility Complex. Innate immunity: Phagocitosis; Complement activation. Specific Immunity: Cell-mediated Immunity. Antigen recognition and effector functions of T lymphocytes. Humoral Immunity. Immunoglobulin types. Antigen recognition and effector functions of immunoglobulins. The memory of immune system

Bibliography

Abbas-Lichtman-Pober "Immunologia cellulare e molecolare" Ed. PICCIN
Mak-Saunder "Fondamenti di Immunologia" Ed. ZANICHELLI

Didactic resources used during lessons (ie, power point slides) have to be considered integral part of the reference bibliography; they will be available on the Elly site, on the course page.

Teaching methods

The course includes only frontal lessons, during which basic immune responses will be explained.
The lessons will be carried out with the help of slides elaborated by the teacher, that will be made available to students on the Elly site at the course pages; lessons will be open to wide discussion with the participation of the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The degree of learning will be assessed at the end of the course through oral examination to establish the learning outcomes on the bases of the proposed objectives. In particular, the student will be able to know the essential bases of immune response and to understand the mechanisms that regulate this response. The student will be evaluated in a range 0-30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam.
