Integrated course unit module: PRINCIPLES OF ODONTOIATRICS

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students the knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of Community Dentistry in the light of the epidemiological oral disease and the health needs of the population. The purpose of the course is also to provide the student with the ability to use the knowledge and understanding gained in the person identifying the risk of dental disease in order to implement the appropriate preventive or treatment.

Course unit content

Starting from the definition of Community Dentistry, explains the purpose of preventive dentistry. Covers topics related to epidemiology, etiology and prevention of major diseases of dental interest.

Definition and scope of preventive dentistry.
Disease prevention and health promotion. Promotion of oral health. Epidemiology and prevention of major diseases of interest dentistry: dental caries, periodontal diseases, malocclusion, dental trauma, oral cancer, early childhood caries.
Oral health in the disabled: gold dental prevention and treatment
Physical Examination extra and intra-oral
Detection of dento-periodontal indices of community
Assessing the risk of tooth decay
Instructions oral hygiene at home
Professional oral hygiene - scaling
Evidence-Based Preventive strategies for priority areas of action on the WHO Oral Health

Teaching methods

Lectures using slides and movies of interventions, practical and clinical discussion of scientific papers, discussion of clinical cases
The student at the end of the course, using the knowledge of microbiology, physiology, general pathology, hygiene must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:
Promotion of oral health. Epidemiology and prevention of major diseases of interest dentistry: dental caries, periodontal diseases, malocclusion, dental trauma, oral cancer, early childhood caries, dental diseases in the elderly population, oral health in the disabled, with an emphasis on preventing dental gold and therapy.

The student also applying the knowledge and understanding acquired, shall be able, even collaborating with other professionals to:
Assess the risk of tooth decay
Give instructions for oral hygiene at home
Detect dental-periodontal indices of community
Working in teams on a project by oral prevention (collection exercises bibliographic information and evidence-based prevention strategies for priority areas of action on the WHO Oral Health).

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the objectives set by the course includes an oral examination. Through questions about the contents of the course will be determined that the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions related to prevention strategies and preparation of a health education intervention, will ensure the ability to apply the knowledge acquired by the student.
