Integrated course unit module: PHYSICAL RISKS AT WORK

Learning objectives

The Radiation Protection Course is on part of a Main Course

The Radiation Protection Course aims to enable the student to learn and to understand the dosimetric quantities and the means to measure it, with particular reference to radiation protection in the work environment. The students will obtain all the fundamental concepts and the knowledge to prevent and to protect from radiation hazards. The student should reach the ability to use the knowledge and understanding gained in order to identify and measure sources of ionizing radiations in accordance law.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student at the end of the course, using the knowledge of physics, biology, mathematics and physical health previously acquired, must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:
- Different types of dosimetric quantities
- Way of external exposure and internal contamination
- The biological effects of ionizing radiations.

The student also applying the acquired knowledge and understanding, shall be able, even collaborating with others such as “Esperto Qualificato”, to contribute to the law application, in the field of radiation protection, in the environment and in the workplace.

Course unit content

The first parts of Radiation Protection course is about definition of dosimetric quantities and the Units of measurement. The way of external exposure and internal contamination are presented. Also the different biological effects of ionizing radiations are explained .
The second part of the course is devoted to the discussion of the instrumentation used in the detection and measurement of ionizing radiations. The third part of the course deals with the basic principles of radiation protection with particular reference to Italian and European legal system.

Full programme

Dosimetric Quantities and Units.
Biological Effect of ionising radiations:deterministic effects and stochastic effects
External exposure and internal contamination
Health physics instrumentation: (Liquid scintillation, ionisation chamber, personal and environmental dosemeters, thermoluminescent dosemeter; etc)
Instrumentations for beta contamination: Liquid Scintillation Counting Process
Superficial contamination: smear test; beta and gamma counter
Natural radiation; radon.
Fundamental principle of radiation protection:
Italian (Lgs. 230/95 modificato dal D. Lgs. 241/2000, D. Lgs. 257/2001 e D. Lgs. 151/2001) and European law( workers protection, prevention and protection rules using radioactive sources, etc. ) An outline of internal dosimetry.

Teaching methods

The aims of the course will be mostly achieved through lectures, together with seminars in particular on the biological effect of ionizing radiations. During the lectures will also be shown and used dosimeters and the most common measurement instruments (eg, Geiger counter, ionization chamber, film-badge dosimeter).

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the course aims is done with an oral or written exam. Using open-ended questions about the course contents will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions regarding the use of particular sources of ionizing radiations in different work environments will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of applying the acquired knowledge from the legislative point of view.
