Integrated course unit module: ORAL SURGERY

Learning objectives

The goal of this course is to give to the student the knowledge and understanding of the surgical problems of oral pathologies that a dentist can face in this practice. It’s fundamental objective that the student can apply practically at least a part of what he learns in the theoretical part of the course. Practical exercises will be conducted on dummies and in the surgery rooms of the Dentistry ad Maxillo-Facial Units.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The students at the end of the course will demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:

anatomy(bones, muscles, nerves, teeth);

overall surgical principles;

wound healing, hypertrophic scars and keloids;

asepsis, disinfection and sterilization (chemical and physical devices);

infections: overall aspects;

infective pathology: abscesses, phlegmons, empyema, osteitis;

antibiotic therapy; hyperbaric therapy;

surgical instruments;

suturing techniques; local anaesthesia;

complications of anaesthesia;

trigeminal pain;

dental extractions: permanent and deciduous teeth;

complications in teeth removal;

soft tissue traumatology;

dental fractures;

Dental repositioning;

precancerous lesions;

needle biopsies;

incisional and excisional biopsies;

odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts of the jaws and soft tissues and their surgical treatment;

pseudocysts;

mucoperiosteal flaps;

apicectomy, odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions of the jaws;

dysodontiasis and impacted teeth;

germectomy;

soft tissue surgery: fibromas, papillomas etc.;

peripheral and central maxillary gigantocellular granulomas;

pathology and surgical treatment of maxillary sinus diseases;

pathology and surgical treatment of the TMJ.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic principles of anatomy, patology and physiology of the humand body and in particular of the stomatognatic organs.

Teaching methods

Class lessons: the program themes will be discussed with the aid of slides. The proposed topics will be the subject of collective discussion and study on the basis of ideas and any questions raised during the lessons themselves.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the goals of the course is verified by an oral exam.
Answering questions about the contents of the course, the student will demonstrate whether he/she has achieved the goals of knowledge and understanding of the contents.
