Thesis/Final examination

The final examination for a second-cycle degree consists of a design or analysis activity in the field of Environmental Engineering, agreed upon with a supervisor and developed by the student with personal input, followed by the writing of a written report (dissertation) and its discussion in front of the Second-Cycle Graduation Commission. In the final examination, the candidate must demonstrate mastery of the topics, the ability to work independently and adequate communication skills.
The Final Degree Examination Commission is composed of at least seven tenured professors and is appointed by the Rector in accordance with the Course Regulations.
 The report for the final examination may be written in English with an extensive summary in Italian.
The Graduation Commission will make an overall assessment of the candidate's basic and professional preparation, taking into account the results of the candidate's entire university career, including the work relating to the preparation of the dissertation.
The dissertations may be awarded a maximum of 7 points plus rounding.
The weighted average admission grade is calculated on all graded assessments; it is rounded up if the decimal is higer than or equal to 0.5, down if less than 0.5; supernumerary examinations are not counted.
Students who have obtained at least 12 ECTS credits in the course of their studies as part of international mobility programmes will be awarded an additional point over and above the weighted average.
If the candidate achieves a final mark of at least 112, the president shall propose the awarding of honours; if the candidate achieves a final mark between 110 and 112, the supervisor or a committee member may propose awarding honours.
Three second-cycle degree exam sessions are scheduled for each academic year: summer, autumn and winter. As a rule, the first potential session for taking the second-cycle degree examination is at the end of the second term of the second year. The winter session is a session of the previous academic year and ends at the end of March.
 
PRIZES IN FAVOUR OF STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES IN THE UNIVERSITY BODIES AND ORGANISATIONS The special mention at graduation for the service provided in support of the functioning of the University bodies only appears on the degree certificate (a stamp) which the student may request from the Student Registry Office, while it will not appear on the certificate which the student can download directly from ESSE3.

Characteristics of the final examination

The degree is awarded at the end of the two-year period upon the discussion of an original paper, either design related, experimental or numerical in nature, completed under the guidance of a supervisor. In the discussion of the paper, the student must prove that he/she has acquired the ability to work independently, has mastered the technical tools used for the activity, is able to handle the theoretical tools in order to process the data obtained and can critically analyse them. Eighteen credits are awarded for the preparation of the dissertation and the final examination.
