Learning objectives

-Have the theoretical and practical basis for clinically assessing the visually impaired person
-Be able to develop a rehabilitation pathway for the visually impaired person

Course unit content

-Hypovision: definition and classification

-Analysis of the main methods used to assess visual residual in the visually impaired patient:
Distance vision, how to measure a.v.
Near vision, how to measure a.v.
Objective and subjective refraction
Study of contrast sensitivity and glare phenomena
Acquired alterations of the color sense in low vision
Examination of the visual field in the low vision patient
Microperimetry in the low vision patient

-How to improve vision in the low vision patient
Types of magnification, tools and ways to achieve magnification: optical systems
Types of magnification, tools and ways to achieve magnification: electronic systems
Special non-optical aids
Cold light, warm light, Led light: effects on reading
Filtering and photoselective lenses for eye diseases.

-How the visually impaired person sees
Alteration of the reading mechanism in the visually impaired patient

-Sight rehabilitation in the visually impaired patient
The expectations of the visually impaired patient

Teaching methods

Lectures and practices. The student will attend the orthotic center of the UOC Ophthalmology of the University Hospital of Parma, where, through activities with tutors, will be addressed and discussed clinical cases.
