Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
- Know how to discuss issues related to both healthcare and the environment and how the implementation of smart sensors represents a useful tool to address them.

- Understand the working principles of chemical sensors and how these can be integrated with innovative data communication protocols to obtain smart devices.

- Know how to apply the acquired knowledge to evaluate the advantages and limits of the novel solutions proposed in the field of integrated sensors.

- Acquire the ability to appropriately discuss aspects related to smart sensors with both specialized and non-scientific interlocutors.

Course unit content

During the course the following topics will be addressed:

-Issues and challenges connected with environmental pollution and health monitoring.
-Analytical parameters defining the performance of a sensor.
-Signal transduction mechanisms.
- Wireless data transmission protocols and integration in Internet-of-Things contexts.
-Biological interactions involving proteins and DNA.
-Main classes of pollutants found in water and atmosphere.
- Analytical discussion of examples reported in literature dealing with applications of innovative smart sensors applied to health and environmental monitoring.

Teaching methods


The teaching activity will be delivered through lectures (24 hours), of which the final part (4 hours) will deal with the study of examples from literature.

The lecture notes will be uploaded to the Elly online platform on a weekly basis. Please note that the lecture notes are considered an integral part of the teaching material necessary for the preparation of the exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will be carried out through a multiple-choice quiz with possible integration with an oral exam upon request of the student.
