Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- characterise the signals in the time and frequency domains;
- characterise signal processing systems;
- understand the main digital modulation techniques for radio communications;
- perform the power balance of a radio link;
- choose, depending on the system specifications, the most suitable medium access techniques;
- Understand the peculiarities of different wireless technologies.

Course unit content

The course aims to provide the basic elements of the architecture and operation of telecommunications systems, with reference to vehicular applications. The student is required to demonstrate, at the end of the course, the knowledge on the following aspects:
- digital baseband and bandpass communication systems;
- power budget of a communication link;
- propagation channel characteristics, including shadowing and fading;
- protocol stack of digital networks;
- multiple access to the shared medium;
- architecture of a communication system, including cellular systems.

Introduction to vehicular communication systems.
Communication systems: block scheme.

Single carrier and multi-carrier (OFDM) digital systems.

Link budget.

Propagation channel: shadowing and fading.

Link layer and multiple access techniques.
Examples of wireless technologies, including cellular networks.

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning is tested by means of the final examination, which ascertains the acquisition of the required knowledge and skills through an oral test.
The test consists of an in-depth examination of certain topics covered during the course.
