Advising and guidance

Advising and guidance (Orientation) refers to all activities enabling future or current students to plan and manage their education in a manner consistent with personal life goals, making full use of the individual's skills and interests to achieve personal fulfilment.

Depending on when these activities are carried out during the university course, we distinguish between:

  • advising: held before the choice of course of study, it targets future students and helps identifying the course to be taken based on individual interests, expectations and aptitudes. In this phase, the different possible scenarios are presented to the prospective student and the options of the university course are explained;
  • guidance: carried out during university, it guides students through their courses of study, enabling them to better interact with the university structures and context;
  • career guidance: onducted close to or after graduation, is designed to facilitate graduates and undergraduates in their transition to the workplace.

Advising

Advising plays a decisive role in the complex and articulated process of higher education of the new generations. The choice of a university course is in fact a very delicate moment in the life of a student, who has to make an informed choice in order to build his or her own life project; shortcomings in incoming guidance contribute to an increase in the number of drop-outs from studies, as well as slowing down student careers by disproportionately increasing the time needed to obtain a degree.
The main activities of the Academic and career guidance Division are carried out in support of and in close collaboration with the teachers responsible for orientation in the Department and range from the organisation of and participation in orientation meetings held at secondary schools to the organisation of educational visits to the Department, aimed at helping students in their final years of secondary school to choose a course of study, from participation in national orientation fairs, organised in various locations throughout Italy, to collaboration in the organisation of the ""Studying in Parma"" open days held annually at the University in the spring, as well as the ""From High school to University"" info days held annually in the summer, coinciding with the opening of enrolment procedures.
