Learning objectives

Gain a detailed understanding on:
functional anatomy of the components that structure the stem cell niches in different organs in the adult;
of structural and functional components of the niches of stem cells and progenitors for regeneration and repair of tissues differentiated;
techniques of isolation, characterization, expansion and differentiation of progenitor osteogenic, chondrogenic, hematopoietic, endocrine organs, skin and eye;
structural, molecular and cellular biomechanis of biomaterials in regenerative medicine

Knowledge and understanding.
Students need learn the fundaments of the structure and component of the stem cell niches in different organs in the adult, protocols and techniques for the regeneration of differentiated tissues and in particular the eye and the oral cavity components, the bone tissue, the skin, and the endocrine organs.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Students must use molecular and cellular techniques for development of a protocol for the isolation, characterization, expansion and differentiation of stem cells and primary culture for the tissue regeneration.
Making judgments
Ability to reason about molecular and cellular protocol for cell niche and stem cell study appeared on an article of an international journal and/or ph-thesis
Communications skills
Ability to understand and be understood in technical situations
Learning skills
Ability to summarize a technical procedure and to write a scientific progress report

Teaching methods

Oral lesson, lectures. Assimilation of scientific literature concerning the methods, the experimental protocols, the animal models, stem cell culture isolation and characterization procedures.

Assessment methods and criteria

End-of-term evaluation and continuous assessment. The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of an written examination. Through questions about the contents of the course will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content.
Written examination by a multiple (four) choice tests. 32 questions on the stem cell, the niche anatomy, the tissue regeneration and tissue engineering. Students must answer correctly at least to 18 questions.
