Integrated course unit module: SUSTAINABLE REGENERATION OF FOOD SPACES

Learning objectives

Knowledge and Understanding: The aim of this course is to strengthen fundamental skills necessary for correctly and comprehensively interpreting technological solutions for building envelopes. This will enable students to intervene in cases of building reuse and requalification, and to conduct a comprehensive and detailed technological analysis. The ultimate goal is to evaluate the most appropriate and sustainable methods for transformation and technological adjustment.

Skills: The ability to select and effectively utilize passive building design and appropriate materials to optimize the utilization of natural or active source of heating, cooling, and ventilation, thereby creating comfortable indoor conditions. The skills will be addressed to cope with environmental conditions such as solar radiation, cool night air, and air pressure differences in order to regulate the internal environment.

Judgment Autonomy: By the end of the course, students should have developed the ability to critically evaluate traditional and innovative tools and technologies that are most suitable for passive building design. This evaluation should aim to foster sustainability elements in transformation processes.

Communication Skills: Students will develop the ability to effectively describe, communicate, and represent the building envelope and its various components at different scales. They will learn to use the most appropriate methods and tools, which will be demonstrated during the lessons.

Learning Ability: Various lessons are designed to assist students in correctly utilizing critical analysis methods for reuse and requalification projects, by incorporating passive design solutions for building envelopes. Additionally, these lessons aim to help students identify the different building envelope elements that comprise the building space and the space that defines it. By the end of the course, students should have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to independently apply these concepts in a thorough and comprehensive manner.

Course unit content

The course aims to equip students with knowledge of technology and environmental factors related to buildings, with a specific focus on their dimensional, formal, functional, technological, and environmental components. The buildings will be analyzed from a technological standpoint, focusing on specific performance factors such as thermal and lighting capabilities. This will provide students with the knowledge necessary to undertake a reuse project that will be dedicated to the production or consumption of food. The goal is to transform the physical space into a functional and practical environment for food systems. The course will culminate in a sustainable reuse project for an abandoned location with similar characteristics.
