Thesis/Final examination

The internship activity is preparatory to the final examination, which involves the design and execution of an original experimental study under the guidance of one or more professors of the degree course. The research activity must relate to topics consistent with the Second-cycle degree course and must be carried out in a university laboratory or in an external public or private body that has an agreement with the University. The final examination involves the acquisition and processing of biological data, their statistical treatment and, finally, the writing of a conclusive paper.  The final examination concludes with the discussion of the dissertation. At the student's request, motivated by documented needs of a professional or personal nature, the Course Council may authorise the replacement of the experimental study with a research dissertation written by using procedures and methodologies that do not require constant presence in the laboratory, on a topic consistent with the degree course and agreed upon with a professor of the degree course.

Additional points may be awarded when assessing the final examination (in addition to the maximum 8 points that may be awarded for the quality of the written work and presentation) to students who are not outside prescribed time for course completion (1 point) and to students who have written their dissertation in English (after an internship abroad, 1 point).

The grade for admission to the degree examination is given by the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the profit exams.

In assessing the final examination, the commission, with the unanimous consent of the panel, awards honourable mention to students who have distinguished themselves for the exceptional nature of their curriculum, i.e. having obtained the degree within the normal duration of the course with a basic mark of no less than 108/110, having obtained the highest mark for the thesis and a final mark with honors.

The special mention at graduation for the service provided in support of the functioning of the University bodies is awarded to students who have participated in Collegiate Councils for at least one year and provided that they have attended at at least 75% of the meetings (justified absences up to a maximum of 25% of the total number of meetings will also be counted as attendance).

As of 6 October 2020, the new degree application process was activated. For students enrolled in degree courses and PhD programmes, this procedure also includes compulsory registration on the AlmaLaurea website and completion of the respective questionnaire.

The graduation application must be completed online at least ONE MONTH before the Graduation Session; the last exam must be recorded at least 10 DAYS before the Graduation Session.

Characteristics of the final examination

The final examination verifies the graduating student's ability to work independently and to clearly and effectively present and discuss the results of an original research project of an experimental nature on a specific topic, consistent with the Second-cycle degree course. This activity is supervised by an expert and can be carried out either in a laboratory within the university or in an external public or private, Italian or foreign, organisation that has an agreement with the University.

The final examination is also intended to verify and demonstrate the knowledge acquired during the university career, problem-solving skills and familiarity with interdisciplinary reflection.

The results of the activity are reported in a dissertation, often written in English and elaborated in an original way by the student in accordance with the Degree Course Regulations and the Guidelines for the dissertation writing.

The dissertation is also presented orally in front of a degree board.

Conduct of the final examination

In order to obtain the degree, the student must take a final examination after passing all other training activities. The procedures for the conduct and evaluation of the final examination are the following ones.

The final examination consists of the design and execution of an original experimental study under the guidance of one or more degree course professors. This examination involves a research activity relating to topics consistent with the Second-cycle degree course, to be carried out in a university laboratory or in an external public or private body affiliated to the University. Thanks to this activity, the student acquires experimental methodologies, analytical skills and data acquisition and processing techniques and prepares an original dissertation. The final examination concludes with the discussion of the dissertation.

The credits relating to the final examination are separated into 'Research activities in preparation for the final examination' (25 ECTS credits) and 'Final examination' (2 ECTS credits) and are acquired in two separate stages: 25 upon completion of the laboratory activity for the dissertation,  2 upon discussion of the dissertation in front of a degree board.

During the discussion of the dissertation, the Degree Panel assesses the student's expository ability and level of understanding of the issues involved in the presentation and awards a maximum score of 8 points, which are added to the student's career grade point average. Additional points may be awarded in the assessment of the final examination (in addition to the maximum 8 points that may be awarded for the quality of the written dissertation and presentation) to  students graduating within prescribed time for course completion (1 point) and to students who have written their dissertation in English (after an internship abroad, 1 point).

At the student's request, motivated by work-related or personal requirements, the Course Council may authorise the substitution of the experimental study with a research dissertation implying the use of procedures and methodologies that do not require constant presence in the laboratory, on a topic consistent with the course of study of the degree course, assigned by a professor of the course.

The procedure for applying for admission to take the final examination is exclusively online.
