Learning objectives
Biochemistry studies the structure, organisation and function of living matter from a molecular standpoint. It includes the structural chemistry and relationship between structure and function; metabolism and its regulation; biological information pathways.
Prerequisites
Before taking the Biochemistry exam, the Organic Chemistry exam must have been passed

Protein structure and function. Proteins of special physiological interest. Enzymes. Vitamins. Lipids. Biological membranes. Nucleotides and nucleic acids. Bioenergetics and oxidative metabolism. Metabolism of carbohydrates: glycolysis, glycogen metabolism, gluconeogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway. Lipid metabolism. Amino acid metabolism. Tricarboxylic acid cycle. Oxidative phosphorylation. Metabolism of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides. DNA structure. DNA duplication mechanisms. RNA structure. Transcription mechanism. Protein synthesis. Iron and heme metabolism. Hormones and hormone receptors.
