Learning objectives

The main purpose of this integrated course, is to stimulate the interest for biological topics trough the scientific hypothetic-deductive logic thinking. For this reason, the full understanding of all the subjects is obtained by the study of the experiments by which the major discoveries have been obtained and
allowed the development of theories. This is pivotal to improve the ability of the students to observe, make hypotheses and planning experiments to
test the hypothesis. This will also increase the student capacity to communicate and use the acquired knowledge of the main processes that govern genetic information.

Course unit content

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of the mechanisms governing the transmission of genetic information and the regulation of gene expression in living things. In studying and learning the proposed topics, emphasis is placed on developing the scientific method and learning the techniques that can be used to measure and verify a certain phenomenon. The program of the course is designed to provide the biomedical laboratory technician graduate with the theoretical knowledge and experimental techniques adopted for the study of the mechanisms underlying the regulation of the flow of genetic information and its application to the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.

Bibliography

Suggested texbooks are reported into the Syllabus of each didactical unit of the integrated course.

Teaching methods

The course will be held on-site and will make use of powerpoint presentation, cartoon animation and video aimed at supporting the that the comprehension of molecular interaction underlying the processes of replication, transcription and translation. During the lectures, students will be solicited to intervene constructively and interactively. The material presented during the lecture will be made available to students on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment for grading will take into account the degree of knowledge of the topics and the skill and the fluency of the student to expose and discuss them, in addition to the student's ability to logically think, and to adopt the proper scientific language. Students with SLD/SEN must first contact the CAI office of the University of Parma (https://www.unipr.it/ugov/organizationunit/225942).
