Learning objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand: (I Dublin Descriptor)
At the end of the course, the student will have aquired a basic knowledge on the methods for generating threedimensional models in the field of product design.

Skills: (II Descriptor: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding)
At the end of the course the student will have developed the ability to invent 3D product shapes according to aesthetical and functional constraints, to generate sketches, to create 3D models via 3D polygonal/freeform modeling software tools, to generate photorealistic renderings, to create a physical model, to present results with slides, posters and drawings.

Autonomy of judgment: (III, IV, V Dublin descriptor)
At the end of the course the student will have to possess the tools to critically evaluate the steps for the development of a 3D model of an industrial product.

Communication skills: (III, IV, V Dublin descriptor)
At the end of the course the student should have acquired sufficient language skills, at least as regards the specific technological terminology of the teachings.

Course unit content

The Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for the Sustainable Food System aims to provide the following knowledge to design students:

- hand sketching for industrial product design, using pens, pencils and markers.

- 3D modeling and photorealistic rendering of products

- building of physical models for industrial design

- elements of still-life photography for the documentation of mock-ups and physical models.

Full programme

(For the detailed list of contents of this laboratory please refer to the syllabus of the two modules.)

Bibliography

The reference texts are reported in the syllabus of each respective module of the laboratory.

Teaching methods

The knowledge and skills are acquired by the students, for each training area, through:

(i) Frontal lessons in the classroom using the projection of slides. The teaching material will be provided on the “Elly” platform (http://elly.dia.unipr.it);

(ii) Exercises and review moments (single and collective) in the classroom dedicated to the final presentation held by the Laboratory.

The details in terms of CFU of the division of this structure are reported in the Syllabus of each module of the Laboratory.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation of learning is structured as follows:

- presentation and discussion of a group project where the students will develop the styling design of an industrial product. This will require the practical application of the knowledge of both the modules,

- presentation and discussion of an individual project, to assess the knowledge from the first module,

- presentation and discussion of an individual project, to assess the knowledge from the second module.

The vote of the laboratory will be unique and will represent the synthesis of the individual votes and the presentation of the group project.

Other information

It is strongly advised to attend the course. The presence of all members of the working groups is required during the design analysis reviews.
