Integrated course unit module: GENETIC IMPROVEMENT FOR MILK YIELD AND QUALITY

Learning objectives

The theoretical part of the course aims to introduce the student to the world of production, through knowledge of the animal material producing milk and the selective procedures related to the improvement of production.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites

Course unit content

Know the morphological and productive characteristics of the species and main breeds used to produce milk in Italy.
Possess fundamental notions about the selection indexes of the main bovine / sheep / goat / buffalo breeds bred in Italy.
Possess the basic notions on the fundamental principles of the genetic transmission of traits and of the selection for the quantitative-qualitative characteristics of milk and derivatives.
Understand the influence of genetics and genetic selection on the qualitative and quantitative milk production of the different species and breeds, also paying close attention to the environmental impact of zootechnical productions.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons in which, alongside the part more properly linked to the transmission of notions, we will try, through discussion, to stimulate the student to learn to relate to the actors of the productive world.

Assessment methods and criteria

There are no ongoing tests. At the end of the course there will be an oral exam which will consist of three questions (one on the general aspects of the transmission of traits, one on selection and one on ethnology).
For students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (SLD), certified in accordance with law 170/2010, specific support methods are envisaged.
