Learning objectives


Understand the influence of sex, understood as biological difference, and gender (understood as socio-cultural differences) on the state of health or disease, particularly in cardiovascular diseases.
Understand the biological factors that underlie the different susceptibility to the disease between the two sexes, the different clinical manifestations and pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases in men and women, with impact in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Gender is particularly important in the study of health determinants (lifestyle, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, nutrition, body weight) also linked to the socio-economic and environmental context that has undergone profound changes in recent decades . The goal is the PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

Course unit content

The course will cover:
the concept of sex and gender and the clinical implications.
Evolutionary origin of sexual differences
The influence of gender and sex in various clinical contexts such as cardiac, endocrine, pediatric, urological, nephrological, psychiatric, allergological diseases and in cardiac, general and urological surgery
