Learning objectives

Knowledge:
The module aims to allow the student to learn the basics of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the territory and especially of the urban aggregates.

Skills:
At the end of the module, the student will possess the basic concepts of urban survey and will be able to read crytically the the multiple components of the territorial and urban scale.

Independence of judgment:
At the end of the course the student will be able to identify the most appropriate survey and analysis techniques to be used as a support for the project aimed at modifying the anthropic environment, documentation-cataloguing or historical analysis only.

Communication skills:
The student will have acquired the ability to critically analyze and graphically communicate the territory at various scales of representation.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of survey field.

Course unit content

The "Urban Survey" module (1CFU) aims to provide in-depth knowledge related to the analysis of the territory and the city and is structured in a series of theoretical lectures.

The following topics will be discussed: urban survey purposes, tradition of urban survey in Italy, methods and tools for surveying and analyzing the urban context: reference cartography, qualitative and quantitative data survey of urban sectors and axes, coding systems, critical analysis of the building fabric and street axes of historical city.

Teaching methods

The module takes place through face-to-face lectures.
The final project, based on the topics agreed upon within the course, will be periodically discussed and reviewed to assess progress and resolve any problems.
Teaching materials used during the lectures will be made available on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of learning consists of a discussion of the module topics and evaluation of urban survey graphic elaborates (related to the final project assigned during the course).

The verification will be so modulated:
Respect of assigned deadlines: 5%;
Explanation of theoretical aspects (knowledge): 35%;
Graphic applications (skills): 30%;
Autonomous choice of representation methods (independence of
judgment): 30%.
