Learning objectives

At the end of the course the student must have the skills to:
1) know and use databases and literature,
2) choose the most useful type of database for retrieving bibliographic information,
3) know the various types of scientific publications, such as communication, letter, article, review, patent,
4) critically analyze the results of a bibliographic search,
5) apply filters to refine your search,
6) export and archive the results of the bibliographic research,
7) identify the references for the preparation of the bibliography of the degree thesis.

Course unit content

The lessons concern the description and operation of 1) the main databases of pharmaceutical interest, such as Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Cochrane library, Scifinder, Reaxys, CHEMnetBASE and the drug database; 2) the European Pharmacopoeia, USP and British Pharmacopoeias; 3) the Espacenet database for patent search and 4) the Journal Citation Reports as an indicator of the performance of scientific journals.

Teaching methods

The course includes lectures supported by the aid of IT tools for the projection of the teaching material that will be made available to students. Online databases will be used to carry out exercises and help students carry out research independently.

Assessment methods and criteria

The learning assessment method consists in the presentation, through the use of an IT support, of a bibliographic search by the student on a topic of his choice. It will be evaluated which and how databases were used, the student's ability to apply filters to refine the search and the organization of the bibliography.
The exam is evaluated as suitable.
