Learning objectives

The course is aimed at increasing students’ knowledge concerning the most debated and complex theories of Educational Psychology. Moreover, the course students will help students develop competences in applying knowledge to various psychological contexts, with a particular reference to school psychology. At the end of the course, the students will know theories, methods and teaching/learning strategies, and will be able to foster them in educational and formative activities.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of developmental psychology.

Course unit content

The course is organized in three didactic units. In the first unit (2 CFU), the main theories of Educational Psychology will be presented and discussed, with a particular focus on the most recent approaches and the methods used for understanding psychological learning processes. The second unit (2 CFU) will address the various teaching strategies as well as the meta-cognitive and auto-regulated learning strategies that students adopt for learning how to read, write and solve problems. The role of technologies for teaching and learning will also be discussed. The third and last unit (2 CFU) will focus on the application of Educational Psychology for classroom management and discuss how teachers can foster students’ participation and motivation.

Teaching methods

For most of the lessons, the teacher will conduct the activity by explaining with the support of slides, either in presence or in distance. However, there will also be several occasions in which students will be engaged in laboratories and practical activities concerning analysis of single cases. recognition of critical situations, definition of possible lines of intervention in school psychology. To this aim, interactive situations will be offered through the platform.
All lessons will be made available in streaming or in video-recordings.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will consist in a written task. Students will have 60 minutes to answer the following questions: two short definition (up to 10 points), two open questions that require a short answer (up to 10 points), an open question that requires a longer answer (up to 10 points). Depending on the evolution of COVID19 situation, the exam will be submitted in presence or in distance.

Expected learning outcomes: good knowledge of educational psychology theories and practical application.
