Learning objectives
The teaching aims to provide the student with essential knowledge and understanding on the basics about general bacteriology and virology, as well as host-pathogen interactions.
Prerequisites
Course unit content
General bacteriology. General virology. Transmission of infectious diseases. Elements on infectious diseases of interest for physiotherapists.
Full programme
The microorganism/host relationship: commensalism, symbiosis, parasitism. Microbial flora. Transmission of pathogens.
General bacteriology: the prokaryotic cell: general organization, morphology and physiology; bacterial reproduction; pathogenicity and virulence.
General mycology: general characteristics of fungi; structure of the fungal cell; yeasts and moulds; mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity.
General parasitology: general features of protozoa; life cycle of principal protozoa.
General virology: general characteristics of viruses; morphology, structural and chemical composition of virions; phases of the viral replication process.

Teaching methods
The arguments regarding the course content will be presented and discussed through lectures. In case the COVID-related sanitary emergence continues, frontal lessons will proceed remotely through the Teams platform (for instructions, see http://selma.unipr.it). Lessons will be carried out with the aid of iconographic material collected in PowerPoint files that, at the end of the course, will be made available to students on the Elly site at the course pages. Lectures will present the main conceptual frame of each subject, summoning questions or doubts from the audience.
Assessment methods and criteria
No interim exam is scheduled. Oral exam, aiming to ascertain the results obtained on the basis of the proposed goals. In particular, the student will be asked to discuss one of the subjects indicated in the program. The candidate should use the proper terms.
The inability to answer a question will result in not passing the exam. The student will be evaluated with votes ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam. The final vote will be decided by mutual agreement among the teachers of the integrated course.
