Learning objectives
At the end of the Laboratory the student is expected to be able to:
- know the contextual design process with particular reference to the topics described in the Contents field)
- analyze and understand the architectural project in its subdivision into aspects of typology, figuration, the urban role of architecture in particular in the experience of the Italian and European city (1st descriptor of Dublin);
- apply the skills acquired in the context of the architectural project with reference to the Contents (2nd Dublin descriptor);
- acquire a necessary and indispensable autonomy of critical (or self-critical) judgment on the architectural project declined with respect to the specific themes described in the Contents (3rd Dublin descriptor);
- enhance communication skills in the context of the architecture and city project in particular with respect to the indications described in the Contents (4th, 5th Dublin descriptor).

Course unit content
The architectural project is the synthesis of the different applied knowledge and acts through the translation of needs (functional, social, historical, but also structural, linguistic, poetic, etc.) into Architecture. The Laboratory is the place where student-teacher and student-student can operate dialectically the synthesis of all the knowledge already acquired or in the process of being acquired.
The Final Synthesis Laboratory in Architectural and Urban Regeneration Project + Workshop consists of the following courses:
- Design 5. Regeneration and urban design (6 CFU);
- Composition 5. Architecture typology and figuration (1 CFU);
- Technologies for the built environment (2 CFU);
- Structural models for building design (2 CFU);
- Urban survey (1 CFU);
- Elements of home automation (1 CFU);
- Sociology of communication processes for urban regeneration (1 CFU).
The aforementioned courses merge their teachings into the final project.
In the Synthesis laboratory, the integrated experience of composing and designing is characterized by an experimental and research process, which involves the experiences previously carried out regarding aspects of typology, figuration, the urban role of architecture. To these are added the technical determinations of feasibility that involve the functionality and its actors as well as the technological, plant and construction components of the work.
The chosen theme will present conditions of complexity, articulation and urban role corresponding to the training purposes centered on the potential of innovative and experimental aspects. In this sense, the theme of the laboratory can be progressively assumed as a degree theme, where an interpretative originality of the drafted project is required.
The design approach method and the research according to original contributions contemplate an articulated development of the project on several scales, with the definition of executive detail of some parts of the same. The laboratory is conceived as a permanent seminar capable of receiving diversified but converging contributions on the topic by the coordinating teachers and external experts, aimed at examining problematic aspects, as well as technical resolution, in the interpretation of the theme. The work will be of a collective nature, in the logic of the design group, within which the individual and small group activity is developed, responsible for the detailed design of parts of the overall project.

Teaching methods
The teaching activities will be conducted by favoring active learning methods alternating with lectures, case studies and in-depth seminars. During the study of cases (in general authors and / or contemporary architecture projects) the comparison with the student on the themes of architectural design will be privileged, also in order to bring out the students' foreknowledge on the topics in question.
The course will instead activate experiential learning cycles in which students will be required to apply knowledge through a rewrite of an architectural project.
Assessment methods and criteria
The Laboratory provides for the verification of learning through the evaluation of the project intended as a synthesis of knowledge and the student's ability to apply them. Any other exercises and / or insights (Ex-Tempore / research / case study) will be evaluated during the year.
The final oral exam consists of an individual interview through which the knowledge and critical understanding of the built architecture (1st Dublin descriptor) in relation to the project will be verified. The interview will also verify communication and learning / reasoning skills, clarity of presentation and use of the specific terminology of the discipline (4th, 5th Dublin descriptor). The ability to apply knowledge will be verified through the project documents.
During the final test, in the case of group design / exercise, each member of the group must master the entire exercise in its entirety as well as explicit the parts that you have personally handled.
The Laboratory has a single method of verifying learning through the final project, that is, there are no procedures for verifying learning for the individual courses of which the Laboratory is composed.
