Learning objectives

Provide the student with the theoretical and practical basis for a correct management of patients suffering from infectious diseases either hospitalized or followed in the outpatient clinic

Semeiology and microbiology basis

Course unit content

Anamnesis, physical examination, diagnosis and therapy of infectious disease cases hospitalized in the Unit of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology of Parma; participation in the visit of patients with HCV, HIV, HBV infections followed in the outpatient clinic; participation in the diagnostic (flow cytometry and serum biochemistry) and research (immunopathogenesis of HBV and HCV infections) laboratory activity; participation in the ultrasound activity conducted on patients with liver diseases.

Full programme

Hospitalized patients: anamnesis, physical examination, diagnosis and therapy of infectious disease cases. Ultrasound section: participation in the ultrasound activity conducted on patients with liver diseases. Laboratory section: illustration of the use of flow cytometry and serum biochemistry in diagnosis and immunological assays of humoral and cell-mediated immunity in the activity of laboratory research in the field of the immunopathogenesis of HBV and HCV infections

Teaching methods

Direct involvement of the student in the reasoned evaluation of clinical cases relative to patients either hospitalized or visited in the outpatient clinic or undergoing diagnostic ultrasound examinations for infectious diseases.

Questions on the discussed topics and autonomous repetition of the different phases of the physical examination.
