Course unit content

Principles and methods for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases
- Demonstration of the pathogenic agent and its constituents in the pathological material
- Demonstration of a specific immune response
- Collection, transport and preservation of the clinical samples for microbiological and virological
investigations
Description, demonstration and interpretation of the results of microbiological and virological investigations. In particular, the following methods will be described:
DIRECT INVESTIGATION (demonstration of the agent or its components in the biological sample).
- Immunocromatographic assays, immunoenzimatic assays and immunofluorescence assays for the research of specific bacterial, viral fungal and parasitic antigens;
- In situ hybridization assays for the research of the ribosomal RNA of bacteria and yeasts from culture;
- Microscopic examination (fresh or after coloration) for bacteria, fungi and parasites; transmission electronic microscopy for the research and identification of viruses;
- Culture for bacteria, fungi and parasites; cell culture of viruses;
- Identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry of bacteria and fungi;
- Research for bacterial, fungal and parasitic DNA directly and from culture, research for the nucleic acid of viruses for identification and/or quantification purposes in the biological sample;
- Research for the mycobacterial DNA and for the nucleic acid of viruses for the determination of the genotype and the drug resistance;
- The determination of susceptibility/resistance of the pathogenic agents to chemotherapeutics
INDIRECT INVESTIGATION.
- Determination of an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic anti-viral specific immune response by immunoenzimatic assays, agglutination assays and Western blot assays.

Teaching methods

Oral and practical lesson in clinical diagnostic laboratoriesLectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.
