Integrated course unit module: PROPAEDEUTIC SCIENCES I

Learning objectives

The aims of the English course for 1st year Medical students are: (a) to provide them with a wide range of medical lexis and expressions commonly used by doctors when talking to patients;
(b) to test their knowledge and understanding of the medical conditions on their study programme.

Prerequisites

Students must have a basic understanding of the written English Language and must know medical vocabulary.

In addition, a number of medical videos (+ transcripts) are supplied where GPs and specialists explain various conditions, symptoms, treatment options, surgery etc. with the aim of enhancing students’ listening skills with topics that are of both useful and of interest.
The material + videos are taken, and available, from the NHS website.
Given the importance of Compound nouns in medical English, these have also been included on the programme.

Teaching methods

All the lessons will be frontal, but they will be interactive, with the vision of videos (+transcripts) and an open discussion about all the topics faced by video/listening sessions.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will be written and it is an aquired ability (no vote, but passed yes/no). At the end of the course students will be tested on (a) the content of the above conditions by means of a multiple choice test, (b) medical terminology + expressions by translating words and expressions from Italian – English and (c) compound nouns by means of a multiple choice test.
