Learning objectives

Connoisseurship (an early treaning).
Formation of a critical eye trained to distinguish artists and styles

The course aims to create a new generation of connoisseurs. Milestones are achieved through the following objectives: understanding of the artistic language, interpersonal skills and communicative expertise of styles; autonomy of aesthetic judgment. Progress is constantly monitored during the lessons, in the following ways: the teacher explains the artistic schools and styles, the student is invited to attend and to partecipate: he tries to get closer to the style of the proposed project, the other students take part in supplement, correct, add useful knowledge for the class; at a later stage, they discusse critical texts, in order to refine the understanding and maturity occurs at the critical autonomy of individual students. At the end of the path, we propose a test exam indicative, in advance, to check the preparedness of each.
The course aims to provide students, according to the Dublin Descriptors for the Bachelor's degree (First cycle - European Qualification Framework Level 6), with adequate knowledge and understanding of the History of Modern Art (i.e. its meaning, its social role, its essential functions: conservative, scientific, didactic) through the history of collecting (1° Descriptor - Knowledge and understanding).
At the end of the course, the student must be able to:
* demonstrate, by applying knowledge and understanding, to be professionally able to solve through the creation of arguments, different kinds of issues relating to the History of Modern Art (2° Descriptor - Applying knowledge and understanding);
* have the ability to independently collect and understand the sources for history of modern art, in Italy and abroad, including the consideration on connected social, scientific or ethic issues (3° Descriptor - Making judgements);
* communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions in the field of history of modern art and on cultural and artistic heritage valorization and conservation strategies to both specialist and non-specialist audiences (4° Descriptor - Communication skills);
* improve the learning skills that are necessary to continue undertaking further study with a high degree of autonomy in the field of cultural and, more specific, artistic heritage (5° Descriptor - Learning skills).
The threshold learning minimum outcomes are the student's ability to recognize different kinds of pictorial styles, in Italy and abroad, by applying the knowledge of their origins and characters with attention to different historical and cultural contexts.

Course unit content

The course focuses on the following aspects:.The History of Modern Art, From the Renaissance to the Eighteenth-Century. Notably, the lessons analize the Relationship beetween Netherlandish painting and Italy

Full programme

The lessons we'll be focused on the main artists since 1401 till 1780 (the teacher we'll explain how to recognize and distinguish each single stile)

1) A Handbook of art History
(De Vecchi, Fiaccadori, Negri Arnoldi, Dorfles):

from 1401 to 1780 (12 cfu)
from 1401 to 1580 (6 cfu)

2) A Monographic study (for example:M. Baxandall, Pittura ed esperienze sociali nell’Italia del Quattrocento, Torino 2001.

In addition to the Handbook, during the lessons will be constantly provided additional bibliographic tools to better integrate the program and encourage a proper preparation.

Teaching methods

Lessons with slides (in order to compare and to distinguish different styles); guided tours in several cities.
Through lectures, exercises and guided visits to churches, exhibitions and monuments, the above objectives are achieved and students have continuous opportunities for verification and implementation of their knowledge.

Assessment methods and criteria

1) Paper. Recognition of images (of paintings, sculptur, architecture)

The exam preparation is constantly checked during the lessons through intermediate degrees of difficulty, exercises, discussion of critical texts; the teacher explains the method and give the tools in order to the define a school of painting and a singular style.
The student we’ll be able, at the and of the course, to describe the imagines and to define the following items: author, style, school, history, influences, style, keywords style

2) The second part of the exam is oral, focused on a specific Book: a list of Art History Books we’ll be provided during the lessons. Otherwise, students can study M. Baxandall, Pittura ed esperienze sociali nell’Italia del Quattrocento, Torino 2001.

In Italian Universities grades are given on the basis of 30 points (30/30). When the student's performance is considered outstanding, a laude can be added. The minimum passing grade is 18/30. Grades below 18 are a fail and are not registered.
A fail is determined by: 1. a lack of understanding of the basic content of the course; 2. the inability to express oneself adequately; 3. by a lack of autonomous preparation; 4. the inability to solve problems related to information retrieval and its decoding; 5. the inability in making judgements independently.
The minimum passing grade (18-23/30) is ascribed when the student's performance is acceptable, according to the 5 evaluation indicators expressed above. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to students who show more than a sufficient level (24-25/30) or a good level (26-27/30) according to the 5 evaluation indicators expressed above. High scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are assigned to students who show a very good or an excellent level according to the 5 evaluation indicators expressed above
