Integrated course unit module: RESPIRATORY AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

Learning objectives

During the course the student will acquire specific knowledge about the topics covered during the oral lessons. In particular, the student will acquire specific knowledge about the cardiac diseases, appropriately using the diagnostic tests. Therefore the student will know the meaning of diagnostic tests in Cardiology. Among the diagnostic test, the student will be able to read the electrocardiogram and to interpret the most important alterations

Anatomy of the heart and the circulation.
The cardiovascular function

Course unit content

At the end of the course the student will have to know the major cardiopathies, arrhythmias, heart failure syndrome, sudden cardiogenic death and its causes. the student will need to know the main diagnostic tests in Cardiology and their correct use. It will need to know the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and, in particular, arterial hypertension and its cardiac complications.

Heart disease:
Chronic coronary artery disease, Acute coronary syndrome. Sudden cardiac death.
Heart Failure: Systolic Heart failure , heart failure with preserved ejection fraction .
Valvular heart disease
Cardiomyopathies : Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopaty
Hypertensive heart disease
Cor pulmonale
Pericardial diseases
Arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation

Diagnostic tests:ECG, Exercise stress testing, Echocardiography, Radiology of the heart, Nuclear cardiology, Magnetic resonance Imaging, Computed tomography, Cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography

A seminar will also be held in October on gender medicine which will focus in particular on gender differences in cardiovascular diseases
