Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of this course the student should know the basic phenomena of the classical electromagnetism and the underlying physical laws. Moreover, he should be able to resolve problems on the subjects treated in the theory lectures.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student should be able to analyze the electromagnetic phenomena and to interpret them on the basis of the mathematical formulation of the physical laws.

Making judgments:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to understand the physical phenomena of the electromagnetism.

Communication skills:
The student should be able to clearly present the basic concepts of electromagnetism and their consequences on observable phenomena.

Learning skills:
The student should have acquired the learning skills related to electromagnetism, which are necessary to undertake successive studies with a high degree of autonomy.

Prerequisites

It is important to have an appropriate knowledge of classical mechanics and ondulatory phenomena as treated in the course of General Physics 1 that it is aprerequisite of the course.

Course unit content

The course includes a theoretical part and a practical one aimed at solving problems (exercises) related to the theoretical topics discussed in the course.

The topics covered are:
- Electric charge and electric field
- Gauss’ Law
- The Electric Potential
- Capacities and dielectrics
- Electrical currents and resistance
- Direct current circuits
- Magnetism
- Sources of the magnetic field
- Electromagnetic induction and Faraday's law
- Alternating current circuits
-The Maxwell equations and electromagnetic waves

The problems are focused on the subjects treated in the theory part.

Teaching methods

Slides will be used to convey the most important messages of the theory lectures. The problems will be resolved at the blackboard, possibly with the participation of the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification of learning will be based on passing a 2 hours written test.

The written test will consist of the following elements (to which the following scores will be assigned): [a] solution of four simple problems (from 0 to 4 points); [B] free answer to two theoretical questions (0 to 6 points); [C] ten multiple-choice questions (1 point). Voting is awarded through the sum of individual scores. and is exceeded by reaching 18 points. Praise (lode) is awarded for scores above 33 (inclusive).

Attending students will have the opportunity to subdivide the final exam through two 1 hour tests and consisting of: 2 problems, 1 theoretical question 5 multiple choice questions.
