Learning objectives

The educational objectives of the present course concern above all the strenghtening and the improvement of the linguistic competences of the students, particularly in reference to the most difficult points presented by the passage from French to Italian and viceversa.
Therefore, the following aspects will be treated:
- the differents linguistic registers: courtly, current, familiar, 'argotique';
- semantic nuances and idiomatic expressions;
- figures of speech and the different possibilities of translation.
The Italian translation of passages of literary works in French will retain a particular attention, above all in reference to XXth and XXI centuries, in order to consider the main characteristics and difficulties of cotemporary dramatic text.


The major requisites of this course are a good knowledge of the basical linguistic and translation competences, as well as a good knowledge of the main historical and theorical approaches about translation.

Course unit content

Being entirely dispensed in French, this course aims at furnishing to students a solid linguistic competence, not only basical, but also from a comparative view-point between French and Italian.
In order to reinforce as much as possible the linguistic and traduction competences, acquired by the students during the preceeding years, texts of different natures will be proposed. They will present various degrees of tranlastion difficulties, particularly referring to literary texts, that will be the object of a serious critical reflection, not only from a thorical point of view, but also from an practical point of view.

During the course, the following subjects will be treated:
- Introduction to the epistemological concept of translation;
- Historical panorama of the main theorical approaches about translation: interpretation theory, action theory, 'skopos' theory, play theory, polysystemic theory.

Teaching methods

The front lessons will be teached entirely in French, even if the Teacher will use multimedias and authentical documents to present the main translation difficulties of the literary text, particularly in regard to the dramatic text.

Assessment methods and criteria

The testing of the acquisition of translation competences will take place through a Written Test, introductory to the Oral Test. Students who will not obtain at least 18/30 in the Written Test could not stand the Oral Test.
The Written Test will concern the translation of literary texts: one from French into Italian and one from Italian into French. These passages will contain some of the main translation difficulties analysed during the course.
