Course unit partition: DRUG ANALYSIS I

Learning objectives

The course, composed of theoretical lessons and individual practice training, is aimed at providing the basic notions for the qualitative and quantitative determination of substances of pharmaceutical interest. In particular, during the practical training, attention will be focused on the qualitative analysis and quantitative determination of inorganic compounds of pharmaceutical interest.


Basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry

Course unit content

Safety and first aid procedures in the laboratory
Symbols, risk and safety phrases. Hazard chemicals handling procedures
Basic laboratory techniques and operations: solubilisation, dilution, precipitation, centrifugation, solvent extraction
Solubility and solubility product

Qualitative Analysis:
Lab equipment and instrumentation
Preliminary Tests
Qualitative analysis in aqueous solution: identification of anions and cations
Introduction to spectroscopic analysis

Quantitative Analysis:
Lab equipment and instrumentation: the analytical balance, burettes, pipettes
Experimental error: types of errors, precision and accuracy
Standard and normal solutions
Volumetric analysis
Choice of the indicator
Preparation and standardization of solutions
Alkalimetry and acidimetry
Redox Titrations
Complexometric and chelometric titrations
Potentiometric titrations, pH-meter
Analysis of the titration curve
