Learning objectives
Through lessons and individual exercitations the course delivers the basics for qualitative and quantitative analysis of pharmaceuticals.. During exercitations, qualitative and quantitative anlyses of organics and inorganics will be performed.
Course unit content
I. Qualitative analysis
I.1. Safety rules and first aid in a medicinal chemistry lab. Pictograms, risk statements and hazard statements.
I.2. Basic techniques and operations: solubilization, dilution, concentration, drying, precipitation, decantation, filtration, centrifugation, estraction.
I.3. Elements of stoichiometry: Redox reactions. Soultion equilibria. Acids and bases. Solubility product. Coordination compounds.
I.4. Introduction to inorganic qualitative analysis. Organoleptic test. Dry analysis: combustion, flame test, Lassaigne's test for qualitative analysis of organic compounds.
I.5. Qualitative analysis in solution: main characteristic reactions for analytical groups I-V; analysis of main anions (alkaline solution); insoluble residues.
I.6. Systematic procedure for qualitative analysis of inorganic salts.
II. Quantitative analysis
II.1. Introduction to pharmaceutical quantitative analysis. Sampling. Experimental errors: kinds of error, precision and accuracy, error propagation. Significant Figures.
II.2. Primary standards and titrated solutions. Gravimetric and volumetric analysis
II.3. Lab equipments and instruments: analytical scale, calibrated glassware, burets, pipets, volumetric flasks, pH-meters.
II.4. Acid-base titration. Titration curve analysis: choice of indicators; potentiometric measure of endpoint. Titration in non-aqueous media.
II.5. Basics of complexometric and redox titration.
