Characteristics of the final examination

In order to be admitted to the final examination, the student must have already acquired all the ECTS credits envisaged in his or her Programme of Study, with the exception of those relating to the final examination itself. In order to take the final examination for the degree, the student must produce a written report (thesis) on a project or activity agreed upon with a professor/instructor (supervisor) and carried out independently by the student as part of one of the courses or other learning activities. The dissertation is assessed by a committee of at least five members appointed by the head of the department to which the degree course belongs, the majority of whom must be tenured professors or researchers (including those on fixed-term contracts), and is chaired by the course president or his/her delegate. The degree grade is out of 110. The report for the final examination may be written in English with an extensive summary in Italian.

Procedure for the final examination

The thesis is presented and discussed during the graduation session, which is open to the public. The candidate will make an oral presentation using computer aids, drawing the appropriate conclusions, based on which the Committee will open the discussion. The maximum time available for the presentation will be 10 minutes. It is alternatively possible to choose not to present the paper by sending it to the Committee for preliminary evaluation. The graduating student must make his or her own copy of the thesis available to the Examination Committee, which he or she will collect at the end of the proclamation.
Once the presentations of all candidates have been completed, the Graduation Committee meets behind closed doors to discuss and deliberate on a grade for each candidate, taking into account the results of the entire university career and the choice to send it to the Committee in advance, waiving the presentation and discussion in the Degree session. The proclamation takes place in public once the Graduation Committee has completed its evaluations. If the candidate obtains the highest mark, honours (lode) may be awarded in the case of unanimous support from the Committee.
