Learning objectives

• Describe the structure and function of the major blood cell types (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets).
• Explain the process of hematopoiesis and the factors that regulate it.
• Identify and interpret common laboratory tests used in hematology.
• Describe CBC count and common alteration.
• Differentiate between the major types of anemias, leukemias, lymphomas, and bleeding disorders.
• Discuss the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of common blood disorders including Leukemia, Lymphoma, MGUS and Multiple Myeloma, Myeloproliferative Disorders, Myelodysplastic Syndrome
• Discuss the rationale of hematopoietic Bone Marrow Transplant and CAR-T therapy

Course unit content

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of hematology, which focuses on the study of blood, blood-forming tissues, and blood disorders. We will explore the physiological processes of blood cell production (hematopoiesis), the function of different blood cell types, and the diagnosis and management of common blood diseases. The course will integrate laboratory techniques used in hematology with clinical applications.
