Integrated course unit module: PSYCHIATRY AND PSYCHOLOGY

Learning objectives

1. Knowledge and understanding capabilities.
Students will be able to explain how psychologists analyze the mental
functions of humans theoretically and investigate them experimentally.
They will be able to sketch the methodological paradigms explaining
what and how the role of the psychologist is within research, but also
within the clinical field of diagnostics and the treatment of clinical and
cognitive function disorders.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. Students will be able to
apply the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired in professional practice,
paying maximum attention to procedures and protocols, avoiding making
mistakes.
3. Independence of judgment. Students will develop critical thinking
skills. They will be able to pick up the signals and attitudes, assessing the
compliance of users and knowing how to orient their attitudes towards
care and prevention.
4. Communication skills. Students will be able to communicate
interpreting the cognitive and emotional processes associated with
reactions to stress and pain to construct supporting environment.
5. Learning ability. Students will be able to work into a professional
team, keeping in mind the psychological components and updating
themselves from reliable sources.

Course unit content

The course offers a deeper understanding of General Psychology and an
introduction to central themes within the discipline.
Learning paradigms.
Memory forms and retrieval processes. Amnesia
Errors and Violations. The swiss cheese model from Reason.
Pain cognition.
Emotions and the emotional competence. The burn-out syndrome

The paradigms of respondent conditioning and operant conditioning.
Systematic desensitization.
Learning by observation and insight
Systems and forms of memory Mechanisms and effects. Amnesia.
Prospective memory and forgetting
Errors and violations.
Errors' classification and definition.
The systemic model of Reason known as Swiss Cheese Model.
Understanding and communication of emotions.
Emotional competence, positive psychology, and wellbeing.
The burn-out syndrome among healthcare professions.
Knowledge of pain. Anticipation and empathy, pain modulation.

Students are reminded to check the teaching material available, and the information provided through the Elly platform.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards,
provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are
not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific,
student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations,
audio-video aids or videorecording of the lectures.
Similarly, video tutorial may accompany the lessons and will be uploaded
on Elly platform with the aim to actively involve students.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written evaluation will involve a 24 questions with multiple choice
responses and 1 with open format will contribute to ascertain the
attainment of all the objectives and will contribute to the final evaluation
of the Integrated Course.
Questions tend to check whether the student has attained a solid
foundation of knowledge and a deep understanding of what was
discussed. The evaluation will be derived from the accuracy levels
achieved for each training goal. The final grade corresponds to the
average of the marks on a rating scale of 0-30.
