Integrated course unit module: GENETIC IMPROVEMENT FOR MILK YIELD AND QUALITY

Learning objectives

The theoretical part of the course aims to introduce the student to the world of production, through knowledge of the animal material producing milk and the selective procedures related to the improvement of production.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites

Course unit content

1st Dublin indicator: Knowledge and understanding: Know the morphological and productive characteristics of the species and main breeds used for milk production in Italy (cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo). Possess fundamental notions about the selection indices of the main bovine / sheep / goat / buffalo breeds raised in Italy. Possess basic notions about the fundamental principles of genetic transmission of characteristics and selection for the quantitative-qualitative characteristics of milk and derivatives. Have understood the influence of genetics (selection and/or crossbreeding) on the qualitative-quantitative production of milk of the different species and breeds, also paying close attention to the environmental impact of livestock production.
2nd Dublin indicator: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: use of practical examples to apply the knowledge reported above.
3rd Dublin indicator: Autonomy of judgment. Be able to independently manage the problems underlying the choice of breeders.
4th Dublin indicator: Communication skills. know how to express themselves using technical language appropriate to the context.
5th Dublin indicator: Learning ability. Students must develop those skills that allow them to tackle subsequent courses.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons in which, alongside the part more properly linked to the transmission of notions, we will try, through discussion, to stimulate the student to learn to relate to the actors of the productive world.

Assessment methods and criteria

There are no ongoing tests. At the end of the course there will be an oral exam which will consist of three questions (one on the general aspects of the transmission of traits, one on selection and one on ethnology).
For students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (SLD), certified in accordance with law 170/2010, specific support methods are envisaged (https://cai.unipr.it/en/).
