Course unit partition: URBAN PLANNING

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools to analyze municipal
urban planning and to develop simple forms of urban design.
At the end of the course students will have acquired the knowledge of the
main conceptual and normative elements underpinning urban planning,
as well as the capacity for analysis and critical reading of planning
instruments.
Students should be able to choose the most appropriate methods to be
applied for the solution of concrete problems and to apply some basic
techniques of planning, such as the system of indexes and urban
planning standards.
Students will have to finally acquire an independent judgment with
respect to the topics covered, demonstrating adequate communication
skills of the same.

Course unit content

The course is divided into four teaching modules relating to:
1. theoretical part, on the issues highlighted by the current urban settlement system;
2. normative part, consisting in the analysis of national and regional legislative framework, with the highlight of the planning tools in place;
3. implementation processes on the analysis of the various stages of planning (cognitive framework, VAS / Valsat, programmatic document for urban quality, etc..) and techniques adopted in planning tools (standard and equipment planning, homogeneous territorial areas, etc.).
4. methodological-operational part, aimed at deepening the principles on which are based the most recent forms of planning (environmental sustainability, urban equalization, urban regeneration, innovative zoning, etc.).

Teaching methods

The theoretical part of the course will be articulated through lectures with
audio-visual aids, while the technical content will be objects of
discussions in a seminar format.
The application part of the course will be developed through group
activities that will conclude with an exhibition and debate on collective
results that the students have achieved.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment will be carried out through:
- practical activities through which students manifest the degree of knowledge and mastery of the topics covered in the course;
- the drafting of group work that will focus on the analysis of the municipal planning instruments in force in a chosen Municipality;
- the final interview exam.
Verification is thus given:
Written exercises: 30% divided as follows:
conceptual correctness 20%
clarity 10%
Group work: 20% as follows:
correctness of the assessments made 15%
capacity-graphic exhibition 5%
Oral examination: 50% divided as follows:
theoretical appropriateness 35%
properties and clarity 15%

Other information

It is recommended to attend the course and the exercises which will be
periodically carried out in the classroom.
