Learning objectives
1. To know the subject in depth in the context of European history in its age.
To understanding and use history texts.
To compare and critically evaluate contrasting interpretations of the selected subject.
2. To apply the knowledege and understanding of the subject to present problems.
To write texts grounded on history books and sources and to apply the methods learned through the course.

Course unit content
Every year a different subject is chosen, relevant to the knowledge of European history on the whole or to that of some European country/countries. E. g. «Christianity and Islam in Early Modern Mediterranean history» or «Tudor England».
After some introductory lectures which sum up the general history of the selected period, the course focus on the subject (a) giving a basic knowledge of events, (b) pointing out and discussing the problems related to the subject, (c) introducing and discussing the selected readings.

Bibliography
A textbook or a general survey on the subject and one or more in-depth readings (selected essays, a book) on one or more parts of it.
Teaching methods
Lectures, with the aid of media (films, documentaries, music).
Assessment methods and criteria
1. Interim focus group about the subject, in order to verify students’ standard of understanding it.
Examination at the end of the course, either written (argued answers to a series of questions) either oral.
2. The final examination aims to assess the students’ level and quality of information and understanding of the selected subject, and their ability to connect it to present problems.
3. The evaluation takes into account the answers’ accuracy and students’ ability to explain and discuss the subject. The maximum score is 30 points. In order to pass the examination a score of 18 points is required.
