Anton Pavlovich Chekhov: drama and short stories. The precious life of the ordinary.
Pessimism does not result in Chekhovian nihilistic positions, but the path to moral perfection and attention to the participation in the most minute and concrete reality. The search for the truth leads to a constant exercise of will and an open mind, free from prejudices. In this context, for example, we must his trip to the island Sakhalin to study the living conditions of the deportees and his action in favor of the peasants exhausted by famine of 1892. Like no other Chekhov marks the crisis of nineteenth-century novel, not only because he chooses the short form, but because he dissolves from the inside the structure by abolishing the plot.
