Course unit content

Basic information on safety in the laboratory. • Guide to the use of the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and European Pharmacopoeia. • Systematic analysis of inorganic, organometallic and organic drugs. • Preliminary tests: organoleptic, ignition. Solubility, dissolution process, types of solvents, the structure-solubility relationship• Determination of chemical and physical properties: melting point, boiling point. • Methods of separation and purification: crystallization, sublimation, distillation, extraction. • Organic Elemental analysis. Assays for the main functional groups and the preparation of crystalline derivatives (amines, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols, nitro compounds, carbohydrates, amino acids). • Chromatographic techniques applied to the identification of drugs. • spectrophotometric methods for the identification of drugs. • Identification of drugs registered in the Official Pharmacopoeia: reactions of identification and control of purity.
