Learning objectives

Biochemistry is a research-based area of study. Study of basic aspects and application of methods and various techniques used in biochemical research.

Prerequisites

Before taking the Applied Biochemistry exam, the Organic Chemistry exam must have been passed.

Course unit content

General criteria in biochemical experimentation. Biological materials. Methods of separation and purification of proteins and other molecules of biochemical interest: centrifugation, salting out, dialysis, chromatography,electrophoresis. Biochemical applications of visible and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Study of enzymatic activity. Immunochemical, radioisotope and radioimmunologic techniques. Potentiometric and polarographic techniques Overview of molecular biology.
