Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to give the basic information on the use of biomasses for energy generation with reference to transformation processes and their impact on the environment. Sustainability issues are considered with reference to several aspects related to the use an combustion of biomasses.

Course unit content
General considerations. The energy balance of the planet. Energy sustainability. Energy consumption in the world. Technologies for the use of renewable sources. Biomass: the availability and characteristics of wood biomass from forest management, direct combustion, characteristics and management for anaerobic fermentation of biomass plants and animals, characteristics and use of biogas. Combustion processes: reactions, mechanisms of formation of pollutants. Fuels characteristics. Emissions from stationary and mobile applications using biomass and techniques for their reduction.
