Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding
The course aims to analyze certain principles of Political Economy and European Regional Economics to better understand the problems of competition between European territories and firms, the evolution of EU role in these dynamic contexts. The reconstruction of a theoretical economic and political framework as well as the presentation of case studies will enable students to develop knowledge and self-references within institutions, public and private, active in an European context, which will soon be called upon to act as professionals.

Applying knowledge and understanding
The student will be able to support and discuss clearly, through appropriate arguments, possible proposals to address European problems related to the topics covered in the course, with particular reference to aspects of economic policy, monetary and fiscal policy. He/She have to understand how EU decisions cause effects in the formulation and implementation of national and local policies.

Communication skills
The student will be able to communicate to various stakeholders, effectively and with appropriate language, his own reflections on the interpretation and evaluation of issues and problems related to the course content. The case study presentation in front of whole classroom can help him to develop these skills.


Learning skills
The student must have acquired the ability to approach in more complex and in-depth studies with the completion of an appropriate method of study, particularly in respect to economic matters.

Course unit content

General Part
The general part of this course focuses on the analysis of the main economic events that occurred in Europe over the last 60 years and the most important economic integration.
The program of this part contains the following topics:

I Part: History, Facts and Institutions
In this first part, it will emphasize some economic events that occurred in the last 60 in Europe and will be given a measure of economic results achieved by European Union as a whole institutional unit and by individual member states. In addition, there will be a brief overview of political decision-making and budgeting policies adopted today.

II Part: The EU Micro Policies
In this part, it will give information about Common Agricultural Policy (PAC), Regional policies (with details of the effects of localization and the most recent theories of Economic Geography), Competition Policy and State Aid, as well as the Trade Policy.

III Part: The Macroeconomics of Monetary Integration and Fiscal Policies
In this part, we will focus on dynamics, problems and effects of monetary and fiscal policy integration.

IV Part: The integration of national and European Policies
In this part, we will try to understand how European Economic Policies affect/determine/modify the National ones.

Special Part
Special part of this course explores the issues of integration between policies and between territories.

Lectures.

Assessment methods and criteria

Presentation and discussion of case study:
-the student, either alone or in a small group, will deepen the study of some issues that will be agreed with the teacher. In front of the rest of the class, he must provide the results of this activity and will be evaluated for consistency, accuracy and originality with a maximum of five points.

Written Exam:
-it will consist of some open questions about the whole program discussed during lessons and at most will see the assignment of twenty-five points.
Possible oral integration:
-the student may integrate the obtained score in the two tests with an oral exam, to be agreed with the teacher.

Other information

There are not any differences in program or integrative activities between attending and not attending students.
